I met Amy while she was working for PHI AirCare and I was an ICU nurse working towards my dream of becoming a flight nurse! I’d come to the realization that my lack of prehospital experience was greatly affecting my success in the skills/clinical scenario portion of flight program interviews, and Amy was gracious enough to offer suggestions and assistance so I could change that. She walked me through the RN-EMT challenge process, invited me to the prehospital and critical care symposium that PHI held in conjunction with Mary Washington Healthcare, got me connected with a local volunteer EMS station so I could start gaining some prehospital experience, and ran me through crash course continuing education hours to help me learn how to swap my mindset from bedside ICU to more prehospital and transport focused. With her help, I was able to complete Virginia's RN-EMT challenge requirements, obtained my VA EMT licensure, and passed my NREMT exam on my first attempt! My husband and I ended up moving to North Carolina to be closer to family after the birth of our daughter, and when my new hospital system’s flight program reached out to see if I was interested in an interview, Amy was the first person I contacted outside of my family! We ran through scenarios and clinical practice questions the day before my interview, and it was immensely helpful! I was offered the job, made it through orientation, passed crew and medical director boards, and have now been operating as a fully-fledged flight nurse since the end of May! I truly do not think I would have made it here without Amy’s mentorship and support, and I am forever grateful that she chose to invest so much in me! If you’re an ER or ICU nurse who wants to fly but is currently in the same boat that I was, you will not find a clinician more knowledgeable, willing to teach, and eager to see you succeed than Amy!
